Fire At Kalamazoo Apartment Building

KALAMAZOO (WWJ/AP) - It was a dramatic scene in Kalamazoo, where rescuers had to rush in to help people in wheelchairs and other residents out of a smoke-filled, seven-story apartment building.

No one was seriously injured in the fire that started late Sunday night at Northwind Hilltop Apartments. Authorities say seven residents were taken to area hospitals for treatment of minor smoke inhalation, as well as one firefighter who had to be treated for a cut hand.

The blaze destroyed apartments on the third and fourth floors, displacing about 125 people.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says rescuers carried out at least 10-15 people. A number of area fire departments responded to the blaze, which was reported about 11:30 p.m.
