TROY (WWJ) – Thanksgiving isn’t until next week but some in Metro Detroit are putting up their holiday lights, decorating the tree and visiting that jolly old elf himself.

WWJ News Radio 950’s Sandra McNeill asks how early is too early to start celebrating Christmas?

Santa Claus has been at the Oakland Mall since just after Halloween. But isn’t it too early to see Santa?-

“That’s kind of what we thought too but (we) might as well get it out of the way,” said Amanda Onstatt, a Sterling Heights mom.

Jenny Roberts of Warren said, “I have already put some of my decorations up outside. I won’t put them (lights) on until after Thanksgiving,” adding that she likes to celebrate one holiday at a time.

Onstatt said she’s getting her shopping done this week as well.

Jana, 10, at the mall with her mom, and she thinks it’s too early to see Santa. “It’s November … He’s supposed to be coming in December.”

As for 8-year-old Max April of Berkley, his timetable is not so strict. “I want Santa (to) come tonight,” he told McNeil.

The Oakland Mall’s Shelly Darmaco said if some shoppers  are put off by seeing an early Santa, just as many are excited. “I think that the people that are probably devastated are the ones that can’t believe that Christmas is coming this fast and they have a lot to do.”
