GRAND RAPIDS (CBS Detroit) Confusion allegedly ensued when one Detroit Red Wings prospect was arrested under the “super drunk” law wearing a Teletubbies costume — and carrying the identification of a different hockey player.

Grand Rapids police confirmed Tuesday that Riley Sheahan, 20, a player on the Grand Rapids Griffins, was arrested on four separate charges. He was arrested for driving a 2012 Jeep Wrangler the wrong way at about midnight October 29 in downtown Grand Rapids.

Sheahan was wearing a purple Teletubbies costume when he was stopped; police said they weren’t sure what he was wearing underneath.

“I just know that (costume) was what he was wearing when he was stopped,” said Grand Rapids Detective John Wetzel. “He had been celebrating in downtown Grand Rapids … There was probably some sort of Halloween party, he was cooperative, but extremely drunk.”

Wetzel added that since Sheahan isn’t yet 21 years old, he had used the ID of one of his teammates — Brendon Smith, 23 — to get into the bar. Smith was the Wings’ top pick in the 2007 draft, while Sheahan was the Wings’ first-round pick in 2010.

Sheahan first gave police Smith’s ID, but kept using the name “Riley,” until officers said they discovered in the booking process he was using someone else’s driver’s license.

Sheahan was charged with operating while intoxicated and having a blood alcohol level greater than .17 — under the so-called “super drunk” law — refusing to take a Breathalyzer, driving the wrong way, and displaying an improper ID. Sheahan allegedly blew a .30 — more than three times the .08 threshold for drunken driving.

He pleaded not guilty in 61st District Court in Grand Rapids on November 6, and is next set to appear for a court hearing December 13.

This isn’t Sheahan’s first brush with the law. Police said he has a previous minor in possession of alcohol charge in Indiana.
