Retail Fraud And Friends Don't Mix On Black Friday

TROY (WWJ) - It's the other side of the holiday shopping season as a Macy's employee at Somerset Mall has been charged with embezzlement.

The 28-year-old Detroit man let three of his friends make single purchases, and then let more than $1100 worth of free merchandise go by.

Troy Police Sergeant Andy Breidenich said there is an uptick in fraud this time of year.

"It appears that it was pre-planned and the worker at Macy's arranged or had in confidence allowed these other people that he was aquainted with to come in and get free merchandise," Breidenich said.

"We do notice around the holiday season more fraud is committed and I do know anadotally there is a certain number of those being committed by those who work part-time or season help," said Breidenich.

The friends who got the free items have all been charged with retail fraud.
