Detroit Surpasses Homicide Total From Last Year

DETROIT (AP) – Detroit killings are on the rise again, with the city eclipsing last year’s murder total in less than 11 months.

The city’s website says that there were 354 homicides through Thanksgiving day, 10 more than for all of 2011. Detroit has been among the nation’s deadliest cities for decades.

Detroit officials report that 309 murders were committed in 2010 and 364 the year before.

Despite the murder increase, preliminary reports show overall violent crime in Detroit is down from 2011.

The Associated Press left messages Thursday seeking comment from a Detroit police spokeswoman.

Delores McQueen-Miller says violence in Detroit is as high as she can remember. Her 47-year-old son Jawan McQueen was shot to death in October during an apparent robbery and gunfight with two men outside a gas station.
