Sex Offender Charged After Watching Basketball Team

TRAVERSE CITY (AP) - Officials say a registered sex offender has been charged after his wife left her Traverse City elementary school basketball team under his supervision.

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports 38-year-old Jared Jay Buchner of Grand Traverse County's Blair Township is charged with working or loitering in a Student Safety Zone as a registered sex offender. He's listed as having a 2002 conviction for third-degree criminal sexual conduct.

A telephone listing for Buchner wasn't working Friday morning.

Cherry Knoll Elementary School principal Chris Parker has said he noticed coach Jessica Buchner exit the gym Nov. 16. Parker said he went inside to make sure someone was watching the team and saw the coach's husband passing basketballs to the team as they practiced free throws. The coach was fired.
