Police: Central Michigan University Student Tried To Poison Roommate

UNION TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Police say a Central Michigan University student tried to poison her roommate by putting bleach in a glass of iced tea.

Ninteen-year-old Kayla Bonkowski was scheduled to be arraigned by video Monday but posted bond and was released from the Isabella County Jail. A new arraignment date was set for 10 a.m. Monday.

Authorities say Bonkowski told them she put bleach in the drink at their apartment in Union Township, located near the Mount Pleasant school about 120 miles northwest of Detroit, on Nov. 11. Police say the roommate was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

Bonkowski, a graduate of Warren Cousino High School, allegedly told police that she poisoned the drink because her roommate is mean.

If convicted as charged, Bonkowski could face up to a 15-years in prison.
