Gustavo Nunez Returned To Tigers Organization

DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers today announced that shortstop Gustavo Nunez has been returned to the Tigers organization by Arizona as the Diamondbacks have outrighted his contract to Triple A Toledo.

Nunez, 24, spent the entire 2012 season on the disabled list of the Pittsburgh Pirates as he recovered from right ankle surgery. The Pirates selected him from the Tigers in the major league phase of the Rule 5 Draft on December 8, 2011. Nunez was claimed off waivers by the Diamondbacks from the Pirates on October 26.

He saw action in 12 games with the Gulf Coast League Pirates, Single A Bradenton and Double A Altoona in the Pirates organization during the 2012 season as part of an injury rehabilitation assignment. Nunez combined to hit .273 (12x44) with three doubles, a triple and five RBI between the three clubs.

Originally signed by the Tigers as a non-drafted free agent on May 3, 2007, Nunez is batting .266 (496x1863) with 62 doubles, 27 triples, 13 home runs, 170 RBI and 111 stolen bases in 478 games during his minor league career.
