Teen Charged With Trying To Kill Dad With Hammer

INDEPENDENCE TWP. (WWJ) A 19-year-old Independence Township man is accused of trying to kill his father with a two-pound metal hammer.

Police said the incident happened Thursday at their home in the 5200 block of N. Ridge Trail.

Tyler Colby is charged with assault with intent to murder after Oakland County Sheriff's deputies said he attacked his father, who suffered broken bones in his arm and hand and a skull fracture. Colby's father told deputies he was sleeping at the time of the attack.

Deputies arrested Colby at the home. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for a drug overdose.

The weapon is a mallet-style hammer, the Sheriff's Office says.

The victim was recovering in guarded condition at St. Joseph Hospital in Pontiac.

Colby is being held without bond.
