Starbucks Unveils Reusable Cups: Good Idea?

DETROIT (CBS Detroit) Brother, can you spare a dime? The answer will be "yes" for all those who partake in Starbucks latest offering: $1 reusable cups that nick .10 cents off the price of every beverage.

It's an effort to curb trash.

The reusable tumbler reportedly looks exactly like a Starbucks paper cup. And the Associated Press says, "As with other reusable cups, the new cups will be cleaned with boiling water each time customers bring them in."

The cups were tested in 600 stores in the Pacific Northwest over the past few months and will be rolled out nationwide and in Canada.

It's aimed at helping the Seattle-based Starbucks meet a goal announced in 2008: to serve 25 percent of all drinks in reusable cups by 2015. That goal has since been reduced to 5 percent.

Starbucks is banking that a 10 cent discount -- which means the cup pays for itself in 10 uses -- will keep trash out of bins. But is 10 cents worth carrying your own cup?
