Sheriff's Deputy Kills Man Armed With Switchblade

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Oakland County authorities say a sheriff's deputy shot and killed a 38-year-old man who was approaching her and another officer with an open switchblade.

The sheriff's department says deputies got a call Sunday of an "unstable subject armed with a knife."

It says two deputies were inside a house and two were outside when the man emerged in the garage and challenged the deputies.

The department says he refused orders to drop the knife, and one deputy fatally shot him.

The home is in Independence Township, northwest of Pontiac.
