No Charge Against Dad Who Left Baby In Running SUV

WARREN (WWJ/AP) - Police say authorities won’t pursue charges against a 22-year-old father who left his 3-month-old daughter in a running SUV before it was stolen from a metro Detroit gas station.

After reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green said they decided not to pursue a warrant against the Jesse Greer.

“Clearly the message was sent, this was a critical lack of judgment,” Green told The Macomb Daily of Mount Clemens. “Anyone listening to the 911 tape would agree… that this father was in complete horror, terror, panic of what he did, causing him to lose his daughter.”

Police say Greer left his baby in the back seat of the unlocked and running Chevrolet Suburban while he went inside a gas station at 9 Mile and Hoover roads in Warren around 6:45 p.m. Monday.

The father called 911 after seeing a man get into the vehicle and drive away. The vehicle was found a few blocks away, at Marmon and Cadillac avenues, with the child safe inside.

“I know this is an emotionally charged issue because the safety of the child was at issue. I reviewed it based on facts – not ‘what ifs,'” said Green.
