UP 7th Grader Brings Knife To School

CARNEY, Mich. (AP) – Sheriff’s officials say an Upper Peninsula seventh-grader brought an 8-inch butcher’s knife to school this week.

The student at Carney-Nadeau school was taken into custody on Wednesday. That morning, Menominee County sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Helfert took a call from the school at 8:33 a.m. that a student brought a knife to school and told some students he was going to kill another student.

The Daily News of Iron Mountain reports that upon the officer’s arrival, staff members had located the student and secured him in an office.

Sheriff Kenny Marks credits the students who reported the incident and to staff members for their efforts in locating and securing both the student and the knife.

The case will be forwarded to the Menominee County prosecutor’s office.
