Newborn Baby Found Dead In Pontiac

PONTIAC (WWJ) - Oakland County authorities are investigating the death of a Pontiac newborn who may have been accidentally smothered.

Officials with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department said the child's 76-year-old great-grandmother had custody of the baby at a home on Leonard Lane. Investigators suspect the 25-year-old mother, who was just visiting, had been drinking the night before and fell asleep on the four-week-old infant on the couch.

Officials said the woman's three other children, ages 8, 7 and 5, were recently removed from her home by Child Protective Services.

After speaking with investigators, the mother was taken to the Oakland County Jail on an outstanding contempt of court warrant for failure to appear in court for a hearing.

The Oakland County Medical Examiner was expected to perform an autopsy on Monday. Possible charges are pending.

No names have been released.
