Automation Alley to host conference on Doing Business in Mexico: Local companies interested in learning about which Michigan-made products, services and technologies are in strong demand south of the border are invited to join Automation Alley, Michigan's largest technology business association, for a conference on Doing Business in Mexico, Thursday, Jan. 24, from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at its Troy headquarters. The conference, which is open to members and non-members, will include case studies by local companies with operations in Mexico who will provide cultural information and give insight into the opportunities and the challenges of doing business in Mexico. Other speakers will include international business experts from the Consulate General of Mexico, Mexico's Ministry of Economy and the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mexico has quietly emerged to become Latin America's fastest-growing economy today. Surpassing Brazil in 2012, it is on pace to do so again in 2013. Mexico's most promising industries include automotive, aerospace, healthcare and information technology. Mexico now ranks eighth in the world in automobile production, and 57 percent of its medical devices are imported from the U.S. In addition, Mexico is the U.S.' second-largest trade partner, with $1 billion in daily cross-border trade, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Mexico has reasserted its role as the world's leading manufacturing workshop, thanks in large part to extremely competitive wages, a weak peso, excellent product quality, lower transportation costs and sophisticated, multi-industry supply chain networks. Other competitive advantages include free trade agreements (including NAFTA) with 44 countries spanning three continents, offering U.S. companies preferential access to other growing markets around the world. Automation Alley Headquarters is located at 2675 Bellingham in Troy. The event is $20 for members and $40 for non-members. Registration closes Jan. 22. For more information or to register, contact the Automation Alley Resource Center at (800) 427-5100 or info@automationalley.com, or visit automationalley.com.
