Trial In Rape, Robbery Of Woman Whose Car Stalled

DETROIT (AP) - A 22-year-old ex-convict faces trial on accusations that he robbed a couple whose car had stalled in Detroit and sexually assaulted the wife.

Police say a 55-year-woman and her 63-year-old husband were in the vehicle Jan. 1 on the city's east side when the man approached them. Police say the suspect showed a weapon, demanded money and sexually assaulted the woman.

Police say the woman was treated and released. Her husband wasn't injured.

On Tuesday, Detroit District Judge Prentis Edwards ruled that there's enough evidence to try Howard McKnight. The Detroiter faces kidnapping, armed robbery, first-degree criminal sexual conduct, repeat offender and firearms charges.

He's jailed on a $1 million bond until a Jan. 29 hearing in Wayne County Circuit Court. It's unknown if he has a lawyer.
