Dog Dies In Rochester Hills House Fire

ROCHESTER HILLS (WWJ) - Firefighters from Rochester and  Rochester Hill have extinguished a house fire on Lochmoor Court in the area of John R and Hamlin Road.

The resident was not home at the time of the fire, but unfortunately, his pet Labrador retriever did not make it out alive.

Shortly after the blaze broke out at around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Diana Anderson, who lives across the street.

"I was out there a minute ago, all the neighbors are out, and the police asked us to please go back into our homes so they can, you know, do their work. So we just dispersed so that they can get this fire under control," Anderson said, adding that she could see lots of smoke -- as well as flames shooting out of the roof.

Fire Chief Ron Crowell said about 25 firefighters were called in to assist. Also on the scene was a school bus borrowed from the Rochester Hills School District.

"When the firefighters -- if they're not assigned to a job on the fire scene -- then what we do, instead of having them stand outside, we keep them inside the bus where they can stay warm," Crowell said. "We also use it as a rehab center for our firefighters. When they get done working we can check them out, make sure that they're OK."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
