La-Z-Boy Plans To Build $50M HQ In Monroe

MONROE (WWJ/AP) - La-Z-Boy Inc. plans to build a new $50 million headquarters on 120 acres in Monroe.

The furniture maker and the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary -- which has maintained the land for decades -- finalized a land purchase agreement this week.

La-Z-Boy says it will break ground this spring and move 500 corporate employees into the new building late next year or early 2015.

The headquarters will be situated across from an oak savannah. Vegetated swales in the parking lots, walking trails for employees and other natural features including meadows are also part of the plan.

"When completed, this landmark facility will provide an inspiring, innovative and collaborative work environment for our employees and highlight our evolving image as a worldwide leader in our industry," Kurt Darrow, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of La-Z-Boy, said in a statement.

La-Z-Boy has been in Monroe since its 1927 founding, but had been courted by Ohio and other Michigan cities to relocate. The city of Monroe, Monroe County and the state offered incentives to help persuade the company to keep its headquarters in Monroe.
