DETROIT (WWJ) Art Van Furniture, 6500 East 14 Mile Road, will be the place to be Friday, Feb. 1, and Saturday, Feb. 2, for the 10th annual WWJ Winter Survival Radiothon for THAW.

In conjunction with the Radiothon, which happens 5 a.m.-10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-noon Saturday, donors are urged to stop by the store to participate in activities and get special gifts. A $25 in-person donation will net you an Art Van teddy bear. You can also donate online HERE or text the word THAW to 41444. Online donors will receive a free exterior car wash at Jax Kar Wash.

In addition, you can join:

  • “THAW Me Out” – From 6:30 a.m. – noon Friday – “THAW Me Out” is a fundraising challenge where individuals and groups will be left “in the cold” to sit on furniture carved from blocks of ice created by Oakland Community College culinary arts students. Taking place during the Radiothon in the Art Van Furniture parking lot, participants will have to collect $250 (minimum) in pledges from family and friends to get “THAWed out.” Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel and Detroit councilman Charles Pugh will be participating.
  • “Art of Strength Workout” – From 8 – 9 a.m. Friday, Art of Strength personal trainer Michael Knight, who has trained athletes and celebrities including Detroit Red Wings players and star Chris Hemsworth from “The Avengers,” will be turning up the heat with a special, one-hour workout session in the parking lot. The cost to participate is $25, with donations going to THAW. In addition, on-site donations from 8 – 9 a.m. of a minimum of $25 will receive a T-shirt and a one-hour training session at your local Art of Strength fitness center to be redeemed at a later date. If you are interested in participating, call 248-932-6500.
  • From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, The Robot Garage Battling Robots will take center stage with kids and adults in head-to-head competition with remote-controlled battling robots.
