McGary Earns Second Big Ten Freshman Of The Week Honor

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball freshman forward Mitch McGary (Chesterton, Ind./Brewster Academy [N.H.]) was named the Big Ten's Freshman of the Week today (Monday, Feb. 11) by the conference office. It marks the second conference rookie accolade for McGary this season.

Considered U-M's "Sixth Man," McGary had a career-best week as he averaged 13.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 3.5 steals, while shooting 56.5 percent (13-for-23) and playing in 30.5 minutes per contest.

Opening the week helping U-M to a thrilling overtime win against No. 10 Ohio State (Feb. 5), McGary recorded a career-best 14 points and career-best four steals, while grabbing six rebounds and playing a then-career-best 29 minutes off the bench. He finished shooting 53.8 percent from the field (7-for-13). In the heartbreaking loss at Wisconsin (Feb. 9), he posted his second straight double figure game with 12 points going 6-for-10 from the field off the bench. He added eight rebounds and three steals, while playing a career-best 32 minutes.

For the season, McGary has averaged 6.4 points and leads the Wolverines with 6.1 rebounds per game. He is shooting 58.7 percent from the floor and is second on the Wolverines with 24 steals.

Overall, U-M has 11 conference accolades this season and has earned at least one honor is 10 of the 14 weeks. Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior HS) has collected two Player of the Week honors, Trey Burke (Columbus, Ohio/Northland HS) has two to his credit, while Nik Stauskas (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada/St. Mark's School [Mass.]) has three Freshman of the Week awards and Glenn Robinson III (St. John, Ind./Lake Central HS) and McGary each have two.

Michigan will continue its two-game road stand on Tuesday (Feb. 12) when it travels to play in-state rival Michigan State in East Lansing. Tipoff is slated for 9 p.m., and the game will be televised on ESPN.
