Funeral Held For Lousiana Hines, Daughter Of Slaves

HARTFORD (WWJ) – A local woman who lived to be 114 is being remembered Saturday. Family and friends gathered at the Hartford Memorial Baptist Church for Lousiana Hines’ funeral this afternoon.

Hines, who was born in 1898, was the second of seven children – both of her parents were born into slavery.

Hines was the oldest African American woman before her death on February 1st. During her lifetime, she owned a beauty shop and was also know to paint and sculpt.

Among other organizations Hines was a member of the Red Hat Society and she and her husband raised three children.
