Dynamite Dinosaurs! Jurassic Exhibit Comes To Metro Detroit

DEARBORN HEIGHTS (CBS DETROIT) What started as a dig for a new golf course became one of the most significant paleontology discoveries of the last few decades -- and now it's on view for all to see.

The Jurassic Journey Dinosaur Exhibit is coming to the HYPE Recreation Center, 23312 West Warren Avenue, Dearborn Heights.

There, for the first time in the state's history, a full-size replica of the "Burning Tree Mastodon" will be on display. The exhibit will include the 11,600 year old skeletal remains of the Mastodon and over 50 dinosaur replicas that roamed the earth during the Jurassic Period.

A replica of the 14' tall "Burning Tree Mastodon" discovered by a backhoe digging a new golf course in Newark, Ohio, is a featured attraction.

This mastodon is the third largest mastodon ever found and the skeletal remains were 95 percent complete -- the most complete to date.  The intestines contained eight species of live bacteria dated 11,600 years old - thus yielding the oldest living bacteria found anywhere on earth.

The exhibit will be displayed 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends May 2 – 12, 2013 at the HYPE Recreation Center.

The entrance fee for youth ages 4 – 13 is $6; ages 14 and older is $12; kids 3 and younger are free. Groups of 20 or more are eligible for group pricing.
