University Internet Outage Not Weather-Related

ANN ARBOR (WWJ) - Many of the state's universities and school districts were hit with an Internet outage overnight.

But Elwood Downing, spokesman for Ann Arbor-based Merit Network, said the outage was not related to Tuesday night's snow storm.

Downing said the issue was traced to some of their equipment that's housed in Chicago.

Service was restored at around 5 a.m.

"We do have our engineers on site, looking at the problem and digging it in. Then we're going to contact our vendor that provides us with that router and switch to determine whether it was a hardware or a software problem," Downing said.

Downing said this is only the second mass outage Merit has experienced in the past 19 years.

Merit customers include Michigan State University, the University of Michigan and Wayne State University.
