Report: Tigers Interested In Jose Valverde As 'Safety Net'

Tigers manager Jim Leyland is interested in bringing former closer Jose Valverde back as a "safety net" for the closer role if the sides can agree to financial terms, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

Valverde had been slated to pitch for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic but withdrew for personal reasons.

CBSSports.com baseball insider Danny Knobler reported in mid-February that Leyland was "shocked" to see Valverde still unsigned. Leyland also considered Valverde a "tremendous teammate."
