Will Mead Be The Nectar For Ferndale Business?

FERNDALE (WWJ) - It's a sweet wine made of honey and it's helping a local suburb to fight the poor economy. Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter says he's just given a license to a third distillery to make mead.

"Mead, for those who don't know it, is a honey wine ... it's been around for centuries but apparently it's attracting it's own new market," Coulter said.

Coulter says mead has become what craft beer was in the 90's.

"Ferndale has an ability to attract ... interesting, millennial type entrepreneurs that are willing to do something different," said Coulter.

Schramm's meadery hopes to open this spring in a vacant storefront once occupied by an old record store. B. Nektar Meadery recently opened a second location in Ferndale as well.
