Man Dies After Hitting Tree In Police Chase

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - A man was killed when his car crashed into a tree during a high-speed police chase in Southfield.

The situation started just before 11 p.m. Thursday when an Oakland County Alcohol Enforcement Unit spotted the driver in the area of 13 Mile and Telegraph roads. The officer tried to pull the man over, but he took off.

Police chased the man to Evergreen Road, where he lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway and struck a tree between 8 and 9 Mile roads.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was declared dead at the scene. A county Medical Examiner is expected to perform an autopsy Friday.

Evergreen Road was closed between 8 and 9 Mile roads for nearly two hours as police investigated, but has since reopened.

An investigation is ongoing.
