Amid Police Corruption Investigation Calls For Mayor To Resign

ROMULUS (WWJ) - A capacity crowd on hand and a call for resignation the city of Romulus.

City Council in Romulus Monday passed a resolution requesting that Mayor Alan Lambert -- who is embroiled in a state police corruption investigation -- resign from office immediately.

"It is my and many others in the community's belief that it would be in the best interest of our community if the mayor stepped down from his office," said Romulus City Council member Eva Webb.

Webb's motion was unanimously approved.

"You have no idea how hard it is for our employees to come in here and work. They don't know what is going on so, you know, he has left all of us in limbo," she said.

Through an open letter read by Department of Public Works Director Tom Wilson at Monday night's meeting, Mayor Lambert said he will not resign and that he would do "nothing to harm" the community.

"If and when I feel like I should step down, I will. Until then, my intention is to do what is in the best interest of the city of Romulus," he said. "I appreciate the fact that every citizen is entitled to their own opinion. I only ask that you wait for the facts to come out."

Following the news of the ongoing corruption investigation, the Romulus police chief and city economic director both resigned from their posts last Friday.
