Love Connection: Detroit Metro Airport Ranked #1 For Finding Romance

DETROIT (WWJ) - Can it be love at first flight? A niche dating website says Detroit Metropolitan Airport is the number one airport in the north to make a red-hot "love connection."

With so much wasted time due to flight delays and layovers, sitting alone at the bar or eating junk food is no longer the best option. MeetAtTheAirport.com, a website that promises  "you'll never be bored at the airport again," surveyed its users to find out which airports are best for meeting other singles looking for romance, friendship, networking or a travel companion.

The survey divided its results among the east coast, west coast, north and south -- and also considered other variables, such as airport size, the number and quality of food options and bar establishments, special amenities, entertainment and nearby attractions. Members were then asked "Which airport do you feel has given you the best opportunity to meet strangers of the opposite sex?"

Here's the survey's top 3 northern airports:

#1: Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport

As the official airport states on its website: "on your next visit through DTW, arrive early and take a vacation before even stepping onto a plane."

Surveyed members named "cleanliness" and "great lounges" as the primary reasons they named the airport as a top place to meet strangers of the opposite sex. Not to mention the airport has an on-site Westin hotel and soon-to-open Be Relax Spa. Can you say airport rendezvous, anyone?

And don't forget about the food. We're talking about sushi, Mediterranean and Mexican fare, plus traditional American cuisine with vegetarian options, as well as local favorites like the Hockeytown Café, Gayles Chocolates and National Coney Island.

Or better yet, bring your date to play the 18th Hole at Pebble Beach on the virtual golf simulator at the airport's PGA Tour Shop. Plus, there's several different shopping options, so you can buy something special for your new friend.

#2:Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport

According to Travel + Leisure Magazine, this airport is one of the highest ranked airports in the entire country. The airport is described by survey respondents as a "mini-mall" with tons of shopping, food and drink options.

Located just 10 miles of both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul, it is the largest airports in a six-state area, and the 17th busiest in the United States.

#3: Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport

In 2008, Conde Nast Traveler ranked this airport fourth in the nation based on multiple considerations, including designs and access. Survey respondents mentioned things like unique good choices; for example, Wisconsin Grilled Cheese, Famous Famiglia (pizza by the slice) and Cooler by the Lake restaurant.

So, the next time you're looking for romance, friendship, networking or just a travel companion, don't forget... you might just be a flight away from finding it.
