Police Nab Attempted Murder Suspect Hiding In Wooded Area

CHESTERFIELD (WWJ) - Police have found a 23-year-old man accused of trying to kill his ex girlfriend.

Chesterfield Police say they found Jonathan Elbers in a heavily wooded area near I-94 and New Haven road Sunday afternoon.

Police had been searching Elbers every since he allegedly forced his ex-girlfriend into a Christmas tree bag and threatened to kill her on Friday.

Authorities first confronted him then-- but the young man managed to escape.

He was found about three miles from the home of his ex girlfriend's parents-- where he allegedly committed the crime.

On Friday, Police said they were called to the woman's home by her parents, who were in Florida at the time, and concerned about their daughter's welfare.

When they arrived at the home, police say they heard the 20-year-old victim yelling for help from the basement, and saw the suspect, 23-year-old Jonathan Elbers, bleeding heavily from a head wound.

Elbers refused to comply with officers' commands and a struggle ensued, with Elbers ultimately breaking free and fleeing on foot.

The young woman told police that Elbers was in the process of tying her up and forcing her into a large Christmas tree bag when officers arrived. She said Elbers choked her and told her he planned to put her into the back of his truck and shoot her in the head.

The capture of Elbers ends a two-day man-hunt for the suspect.
