Detroit's 'Shinola' In National Spotlight
DETROIT (WWJ) - A high-end specialty shop in Detroit is drawing national media attention.
CNBC business reporter Mary Thompson first learned about Shinola in the Wall Street Journal -- and was immediately intrigued.
"It was interesting because it was being made in Detroit. And then I figured out it was Shinola, so I immediately went online and learned more about the story," Thompson told WWJ Newsradio 950's Marie Osborne. "I thought it was fascinating; it had a great story, and there was just an interesting element to it."
She said it's obvious to a lot of people why this company settled in Detroit to manufacture its goods.
"It's rich history of design, its rich history of manufacturing. And while Detroit has a long way to go, certainly, to ever return to its heyday, when you take it one step at a time with small, innovative companies like Shinola, like some of the other creative companies that are here in Detroit, you know it's a start -- and a positive one for a city that's had a very difficult times."
Shinloa, which makes fine watch, bike, and leather goods, is located in Detroit's growing New Center area.
