"Gown Town" Outfits High School Girls With Prom Dresses

ROYAL OAK (WWJ) - Dozens of girls now have a gown for the big dance.

The third annual Prom Dress Giveaway called "Gown Town" was held in Royal Oak Sunday.

Taylor Stewart drove all the way to the David Presley School of Cosmetology from Romeo to pick out a dress for the prom.

Gown Town (TLee) 1Many of the teens arrived with their moms to look at and try on the dresses donated from young women all over the metro Detroit area.

"Prom dresses are so expensive, I can't even afford one, they are like, two-three hundred, even six hundred dollars and that's the same reason she is here too," said Stewart.

She's referring to her friend, Victoria Flores, also of Romeo, who says with her small budget, this was the only way to go.

"With graduation, then you've got your invitations and your pictures ... it's pretty big expenses," Flores added.

The dresses were collected by our sister station 98.7 Amp Radio, and cleaned at no charge by Dry Clean Depot.

98.7 Amp Radio morning personality Coop said for three years now the goal has been to help young women feel and look beautiful on their special day.

"Prom dresses are like two-hundred, three-hundred dollars and so we thought,'why not take those dresses that people just have lying in their closet and if they are kind enough they'll donate," said Coop. "We collected all through the month of March (and) had them dry cleaned."
