New In Ferndale: Convenient Parking For Your Bike

FERNDALE (WWJ) - The city of Ferndale will replace one Woodward Ave. parking spot north of Nine Mile Road just in front of Howe's Bayou with a bike rack.

The Ferndale DDA's Executive Director Cristina Sheppard-Decius says it's part of a program to install more bike racks around the city.

"It's actually proven that it's five time more safe to be in the roadway than on a sidewalk biking," said Decius of the DDA.

One resident that WWJ's Sandra McNeill spoke with said she is concerned with using up valuable parking spots with the bike racks.

But Decius says that it could actually help with congestion.

Howe's Bayou manager Jonathon Fielder agrees "We're excited about it, It's just taking up one parking spot that will hold 12 bikes. It should help with the load on the parking downtown - I think it would be great for business."

Howe's customer Donzel D'Grafinin has a more relaxed approach, "Oh no, it should be fine ... everybody should have the opportunity to travel (by bike) people are going to save gasoline."

D'Grafinin says he'll ride his bike after work and likes having an accessible place to park.

Decius says it's all to encourage those who live in the city to bike. With 12 bikes parked in one spot, it's hoped the racks will relieve traffic congestion and encourage more people to shop and dine downtown.
