Glucose Meters Recalled

DETROIT (WWJ) - A device used by diabetics has been recalled.

Abbott laboratories is recalling its FreeStyle InsuLinx Blood Glucose Meters after finding the meters display and store incorrect test results for dangerously high blood sugar levels.

That's an extremely high and rare level that requires immediate medical attention.

The inaccurate readings can cause to a delay in identifying the problem or incorrect treatment, which could  in turn lead to serious injury or death.

"Our first priority is to safeguard the health and safety of patients," said Abbott senior vice president Heather Mason, in a statement. "We are committed to ensuring that our customers are able to continue to test their blood glucose with confidence, and we initiated this voluntary recall to ensure our products continue to meet the highest standards of quality and safety. We regret any inconvenience this action may cause."

Abbott said customers with the meter are asked to visit www.freestyleinsulinx.com/swupdate for a software update. (The software update will allow customers to maintain settings and historical data on their meter).

Alternatively, customers can call the Abbott Diabetes Care Customer Service at 1-866-723-2697 to return and replace their meter for free.
