DETROIT (WWJ) – It’s April 15th! Have you filed your taxes yet? It appears many people haven’t, although tonight’s the deadline to file federal and state returns.

The latest figures show that more people are running later than usual with their tax returns. The number of filings is down four percent from last year, while the average refund from Uncle Sam is down between 1 and 2 percent from this time last year.

Metro Detroiters like Sidney Johnson of Pontiac will be the first to tell you he doesn’t like to send in his returns any earlier than necessary, but he did make an exception this year.

“Actually, I did last week,” Johnson said. “Usually, I procrastinate; I don’t know why, I know I shouldn’t but I did so … I filed last week. Big relief, so glad I’m done with it.”
