1 Dead, 1 Injured In Dexter Water Treatment Plant Explosion

DEXTER VILLAGE (WWJ) – One man was killed and another critically injured in an explosion Monday afternoon in the Village of Dexter.

The blast happened at 1:39 p.m. at the Dexter Utilities Department’s Water Treatment Plant, which is being remodeled. When the men disassembled a holding tank — it exploded.

Fire Chief Loren Yates describes the scene when he arrived.

“They were cutting away some steel, like I said they are remodeling the place, and they were the steel and apparently when they lit the torch it ignited in the thing,” Chief Yates said.

“When we got there … both victims were on the roof, one was apparently blown onto the roof.”

Both men are said to be in their 20’s. They were transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, where one was pronounced dead — the other is reported in critical but stable condition.
