Multiple Injuries In Detroit Bus Crash

DETROIT (WWJ) - As many as 10 people were hurt in a bus crash Wednesday morning on Detroit's west side.

Reporting from the scene, on Evergreen Road near Joy Road, WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell said the DDOT bus driver, six or more bus passengers, and the driver of a car hit by the bus were all rushed to a local hospital.

Neighbor Shilika Hurd said she saw what happened.

"She ran the stop sign and ... tried to go straight," said Hurd. "She tried to beat the bus but she didn't have enough time. You can't beat no bus!"

The bus struck the car and then both vehicles ended up on lawns on opposite sides of Evergreen -- the bus slamming into a tree.

Another witness said the driver of the car started to walk away from the crash site, noticed she was bleeding, then turned around and came back.

A police officer told Campbell the bus driver is "blessed to be alive."

The crash pushed the bus onto the front lawn of Leon Gollman's home.

"[I] heard a bunch of crunching, and it sounded like it was getting closer and closer ... and I looked out the window and saw the bus was right there," Gollman said.

Gollman said he often sees people run that stop sign.

"They do. It's always an accident. This is like the third accident in front of this house. They fly up and down this street all the time," he said.

All the injuries appeared to be non-life threatening.
