DETROIT (WWJ) – He’s the first U.S. athlete in a major sport to declare he’s gay. And Monday pro basketball player Jason Collins’ decision to disclose that he is gay is drawing support from the White House, other NBA players and other athletes as well.

Former Piston Bay Boy Rick Mahorn is among those applauding Collins. Mahorn says he may have a tough time in the locker room … but that’s not unusual in the NBA.

“I almost ate myself out of the league, I was a big kid … there are always detractors in anything that you do … your ears are too big, your hair cut is ugly or you know, you’ve got flat feet, there are always detractors in any field that you do,” Mahorn said.

Mahorn says it’s important to just stay true to yourself.
