Officials: Giraffe Steps On Binder Park Zoo Worker

NEWTON TWP. (WWJ/AP) - Officials say a giraffe stepped on an employee of Binder Park Zoo who had fallen down while working with the animal.

Zoo officials say the woman was putting the giraffes in their barn for the night around 7 p.m. Monday at the zoo in Calhoun County's Newton Township, near Battle Creek.

The woman apparently lost her footing and fell and hit her head. Officials said a giraffe then stepped on her foot.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to a hospital for treatment of injuries that weren't believed to be serious.

Binder Park CEO Diane Thompson told WOOD-TV the zoo will review its procedures following the injury, but it doesn't appear anything was done inappropriately. She said the giraffe was not acting aggressively and the injury appeared to be accidental.

No one else was hurt.
