Headstones Uncovered In Roseville Yard

ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - It was an eerie and surprising find for a Macomb County homeowner, who uncovered a series of cemetery headstones in her backyard.

Roseville police say the homeowner, in the process of  installing a new patio, discovered the stones buried several inches below ground. She kept digging, and when she found several more, decided to call police who rushed to investigate.

"These were carved headstones with ... names and date of birth, the year the person passed away," said Roseville Deputy Police Chief Donald Glandon. "We gathered up a total of 14, with various dates on them, from when the people were deceased from the late 40s, early 50s, up into the early 80s."

Glandon said, upon closer inspection, it was determined that no human remains were on the site, along Martin Road, and the home does not sit over a forgotten cemetery.

Glandon said it appears the headstones were used as some type of patio walkway by a previous homeowner. However, police still do want to know where they came from, and if they might have been stolen.

"There may not be a crime here, but we're still investigating," Glandon said.
