Detroit Police Search For Cab Driver After Boy Killed In Hit-And-Run

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are looking for the driver of a yellow Checker Cab van in connection with the hit-and-run death of a 6-year-old boy.

Police say the accident happened around 4:45 p.m. on Friday in the 8000 block of Schaefer, near Tireman on the city's west side.

According to police, Mohamed Bah was walking home from school when he crossed the street and was struck by the Checker Cab van. The boy was then struck by another vehicle.

Officer Scott Sheets said the cab driver got out of his van and when he saw the child laying in the road, he got back in his vehicle and left the scene.

"We believe the van struck the child first, pulling into the southbound lanes of traffic, and then a vehicle traveling south on Schafer made contact with the child. The driver of that vehicle did stay at the scene and was a willing participant in the investigation," Sheets said.

Bah was transported to Detroit Children's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Sheets said investigators are making contact with the Checker Cab company in hopes they can help identify the driver.

"We're very confident right now, and we're hoping we're going to get the support of the Checker Cab company," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detroit police at 313-596-1462 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
