DETROIT PROUD: Jason Stollsteimer
CBS 62 recently had the chance to sit down with Jason Stollsteimer, front man for Detroit-area rockers The Hounds Below. Jason joins Mathew Hofman, Adam Padden, and Will Shattuck in a 4-piece line-up that produces catchy melodies, with toe-tapping beats - and they've quickly built quite a reputation both in the Detroit music scene, and on a national scale, as well.
You may recognize Jason from his former outfit, The Von Bondies (you know them - they're the ones behind that catchy jam from the early '00s, "C'mon, C'mon"). There's no doubt that The Von Bondies had a successful run - securing slots in the Billboard Hot 100, rocking out on late night TV, and touring both nationally and internationally. When it came time for Jason to assemble his next ensemble, though, he came back to his Detroit roots, and built The Hounds Below right here in the Detroit Metro area.
Pretty cool, right?
We think so, too. Talking to Jason about the Detroit music scene, he describes it as 'eclectic.' He first got into Detroit music with Motown, and says that whereas Detroit used to have defined genres like hard rock, blues, garage rock, or techno..."now it's all over the map."
"There is a heartbeat in Detroit," he says. "Detroit's music scene is something to be proud of because...it's consistent. It's consistently surprising. It's consistently loud and in your face."
And he's right. Everywhere we turn, we're surrounded by Detroit music, past and present. Whether you're in your car driving to the beats of Eminem, or you're at the grocery and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas come over the speakers...when "What I Like About You" by The Romantics is on your TV in its latest commercial ad campaign, or you decide to catch a live show at the Magic Stick...Detroit music is all around.
As Jason so eloquently put, "Music is made to be celebrated. Support your local music and help it become more than local. Then, you can wave those flags above your head and be proud of them."
