Detroit Director Credits Degree With Honing Problem-Solving Skills
Having the ability to work with a wide range of people is difficult but can be learned with a strong foundation in education. With a bachelor's degree, one can gain important knowledge about different situations in managing a fast-paced business.
Nicole Wellman is the director of operations and systems integration at NorthGate, a company just northwest of Detroit that specializes in supply chain solutions -- ranging from warehousing to reverse logistics. She recalls the benefits of her education, which helped her launch a successful career in a demanding work environment.
What is your current position within the tech field?
"I am the director of operations and systems integration, NorthGate. I manage a 3PL warehousing and reverse logistics operation for NorthGate. Additionally, I am responsible for all of the I.T. system and technology for NorthGate."
What is one key element of your education that led to your career success?
"Problem solving is a must have for any manager. Whether it be with the owner, or a management group setting, or an individual on the production floor, situations arise daily and my education has taught me to work with different personality types, different communication styles and to distinguish the different end goals with the final result being to provide unparalleled results to our customer."
Would you consider your degree a good entry point into technology and management?
"I do feel my education helped develop my problem solving skills in my current management position. Furthermore, the I.T. field changes quickly and without the education I received, I could not envision being able to keep up with the constant changes."
