The feud between Sergio Garcia and Tiger Woods has been well documented. Garcia at Tuesday night’s Golf Writers dinner in England sank to new lows- and must be punished.
Joking or otherwise, there is no place for an obviously racially insensitive remark that includes the words “we will serve him fried chicken every night”. That is what Garcia said in reference to what he would serve Tiger Woods were they to have dinner together.
In his Wednesday morning press conference Sergio apologized to Tiger. Yet at the same time was incredibly insincere when he said he didn’t realize that remark would be taken as racially insensitive. Nobody believes that. Nor do we believe that he was unaware of the racially insensitive comments made by Fuzzy Zoeller about Woods in 1997.
Zoeller lost his major sponsor Kmart after those remarks. The same thing should happen to Garcia now. Taylor Made Golf has got to cut him loose! Tiger lost most of his sponsors for marital infidelity. This will haunt Garcia for the balance of his career.
Sergio Garcia’s recent comment was offensive and in no way aligns with TaylorMade-Adidas Golf’s values and corporate culture. We have spoken with Sergio directly and he clearly has regret for his statement and we believe he is sincere. We discussed with Sergio that his comments are clearly out of bounds and we are continuing to review the matter.
