DETROIT (WWJ) - What started as a carjacking ended in a deadly crash following a police chase on Detroit’s southwest side.
Police say the carjacking happened early Thursday morning in River Rouge. A police chase ensued, which ended when the suspect crashed the vehicle into a utility pole on Dix Road near Vernor Highway, just north of I-75.
Police say one person was killed and another is in custody. Both are described as males in their early 20s.
Hovering over the scene in the WWJ Chopper 950, Traffic Reporter Bill Szumanski said the accident has caused the closure of Dix Road between Vernor Highway and Central Street.
“We do see them tending to the one vehicle here. It looks like it glanced off of a utility pole, rolled over and ended up in the front yard of a business of Dix Street and possibly an ejection as well, there is one body laying on the sidewalk that is partially covered with a tarp,” he said.
At least two utility poles were knocked down in the crash. DTE Energy officials are currently on the scene, trying to restore power to the area.
