Detroit Mercy Names NCAA Veep Vowels As New AD
DETROIT (AP) — The University of Detroit Mercy has named NCAA vice president Robert C. Vowels as its new athletic director.
The school made the announcement Tuesday at a news conference in Detroit. Vowels replaces replace Keri Gaither, who resigned in October.
Vowels has served as the NCAA's vice president for membership and student-athlete affairs. The Division I school has 19 men's and women's intercollegiate sports teams.
Before joining the NCAA, Vowels served as commissioner of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
He played football at Duke and earned a law degree at the North Carolina Central University.
