Man Fatally Attacked In Detroit's Brightmoor Neighborhood

DETROIT (WWJ) - A man has died after being attacked at his home in Detroit's Brightmoor neighborhood.

The situation unfolded early Wednesday morning at a residence on Rockdale Street, between Keeler and Midland streets on the city's west side. At the time of the attack, a 6-year-old and 9-year-old child were inside the house with their mother. They were uninjured.

The man, who was getting ready to take the children to school, reportedly exited his home and was ambushed by an unknown assailant who came out of an abandoned house and opened fire.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Mike Campbell said fire department EMS workers took the man out of his house on a stretcher. He was rushed to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead. His name was not released.

In a search to find the suspect, police brought in tracking dogs and went through an uncut field to a row of abandoned houses about a block away, but apparently lost the scent. Police are now speaking with witnesses, trying to piece together exactly what happened. Crime scene investigators were observed combing through a black Dodge Magnum that was parked in the home's driveway.

Darrell, who lives in the area, said he has a pretty good idea of what went down.

"That guy got a nice car and for the second time, somebody tried to get him. But this time it didn't go quite as expected," he said.

Darrell said it shouldn't be a shock that Detroit is a tough place to live, but things are especially bad in his neighborhood.

"For a lot of guys around here in Brightmoor, it is the jungle. We've got a lot of overgrowth, burnt down and abandoned houses, there's plenty of places for people to hide and, you know, a lot of people do get ambushed around here," he said.

No arrests have been made in the case. An investigation is ongoing.
