Lions Sign RB Montell Owens

Allen Park, Mich.— The Detroit Lions announced today that they have signed RB Montell Owens. Contract terms were not disclosed.

An eight-year veteran and two-time Pro Bowl selection (2010, 2011) on special teams, Owens spent the last seven seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars where he established himself as one of the NFL's best special teams cover men. He owns the franchise record for career special teams tackles with 118 and is tied for the record for special teams tackles in a single season with 30. His 2010 Pro Bowl nod also made him the first Jaguars player to receive the honor on special teams.

An undrafted rookie out of Maine in 2006, Owens' career totals include 104 games played, 118 special teams tackles, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries, as well as 56 carries for 292 yards (5.2 avg) and three touchdowns at running back. In 2012, he saw increased action at running back, finishing the season with a career-high 42 carries for 209 yards and one touchdown, as well as eight receptions for 113 yards.
