Tigers Acquire Francisco Martinez From Seattle

DETROIT – The Tigers today announced that the club has acquired the contract of outfielder/third baseman Francisco Martinez from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for a player to be named later or cash considerations by June 15. The Tigers have optioned Martinez to Single A Lakeland.

Martinez, 22, returns to the organization that originally signed him as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2007. He was sent to the Mariners as part of the six-player trade that brought Doug Fister to the Tigers on July 30, 2011. He batted .206 (26x126) with six doubles and seven stolen bases in 34 games with Double A Jackson in the Mariners organization this season.

To make room for Martinez on the club's 40-man roster, the Tigers today designated for assignment the contract of outfielder Quintin Berry.
