Schools Close For Day After Boy Seen With Gun
DOWAGIAC (AP) - Officials say a school district in southwestern Michigan has closed for the day after a boy spotted at a middle school with a gun.
In response to the sighting, Dowagiac Union Schools were placed on lockdown before students arrived Monday morning and then closed. Authorities say the boy was a 13-year-old former student and he shot himself in woods near the school as police responded.
The boy was taken to a hospital, where authorities say he died. Authorities say they didn't immediately know why the boy came to the school.
The district in Cass County is about 70 miles southwest of Grand Rapids.
It plans to reopen Tuesday with extra security and counselors.
