They don’t come much better than Lem Barney.

He’s the greatest defensive back in Lions history. A member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. A former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. And in some ways, those honors pale in comparison to the honor Barney will receive Saturday night at Ford Field.

Lem Barney will be honored along with four other Detroiters at “A Salute to Detroit’s Hometown Heroes 2013”. The night will honor all the work that Barney has done over the years with charities and youth groups around Detroit.

I talked to Lem on Friday about why this city is coming back and about why so many great athletes call Detroit home long after their playing careers are over. I also asked him if the greatest defensive back in Lions history could cover the greatest wide receiver in Lions history – Calvin Johnson. Barney’s answer might surprise you.
